What's a typical day like?
Each day is different apart from the fact that it is challenging and will push you to the limit!
The ride is challenging and to make the most of daylight we will be rising early and typically spending 8-9 hours in the saddle. A basic itinerary is listed below.

  • Day 1 – Climb Ben Nevis / cycle 75 miles (early start on the Ben to allow sufficient time for cycle)
  • Day 2 – Full day in the saddle - 95 mile ride.
  • Day 3 – Full day in the saddle – 75 mile ride.
  • Day 4 – Climb Scafell Pike / cycle 56 miles.
  • Day 5 – Full day in saddle – 102 mile ride.
  • Day 6 – 37 mile cycle / climb Snowdon –celebration!

All miles are approximate and the route may change depending on conditions and other influences out of our control.

The actual timetabling of each day is quite firm to allow us to make the most of daylight hours – more details will be given in the daily briefing:

  • Breakfast followed by daily route brief
  • Daily route cards and contact cards will be issued to all riders
  • Lunch stops will be at the choice if the rider. (Lunch is not provided)

What kit will I need?
This list should provide a good outline of required items but is not a directive.

Clothing
Participants should take into account the nature of the challenge ahead. You will be walking the highest peaks in Scotland, England and Wales. Proper walking boots, waterproofs and layered clothing is vital. Walking poles can be very useful to reduce strain on the body but not essential. A day pack to allow the carrying of water/snacks should be considered.

We hope to be blessed with great weather for the event but we can’t guarantee it!

Cycle clothing will largely be at the discretion of the participant – you know what is comfortable to wear for a long day in the saddle – be prepared for wet weather and have sufficient for the length of the event – washing facilities may not present themselves!

Evenings will allow you to dress in a more relaxed and comfortable fashion.

Bike equipment
Each participant should carry with them each day:

  • Puncture repair kit
  • 2 spare tubes
  • Pump
  • Multi-tool
  • Ability to make puncture repairs

Tri-Nations Bike & Hike will have access to additional tubes and tyres, brake pads, cleaning products and spokes. It is beneficial for participants to have the skills to make necessary brake and gear adjustments. A range of tools will be available for participants to use at overnight stops.

We would also recommend that your cycle is serviced prior to departure to reduce the chance of component failure.

Personal items
Items of a personal nature such as cameras, phones, books etc may of course be brought along. Any relevant chargers should be brought and stored in luggage to ensure it moves from overnight stop to overnight stop. Tri-Nations will move luggage providing it is closed securely, properly marked and carrying the numbered tag provided. Any items left behind are the responsibility of the participant as Tri-Nations Bike & Hike will not perform a room check prior to departure.

What if I have a mechanical failure?
Tri Nations Bike & Hike strongly urge participants to have their cycle serviced prior to the start of this event to reduce the likelihood of component failure. We also insist that each rider is able to repair their own punctures (a repair kit, 2 tubes, pump and multitool should be carried on each cycle). Should a more severe mechanical failure occur we will endeavour to help you repair the cycle or get the cycle to a repair centre. Additional tubes and tyres will be carried by the support vehicles and available to you at a reasonable rate should you need to replenish your stocks.

What if I need to retire?
Should you feel the need to retire from a day on the route; a support vehicle will collect you and your cycle and take you along to the overnight stop to give you chance to recover for the next day.

Should you need to retire from the whole event then we will endeavour to get you to an appropriate railway station during the day (this may not be immediate due to location and positioning of luggage). There will be no refund given in the event of full retirement and any onward travel costs will be the responsibility of the participant.

How fit do I need to be?
This challenge requires a high level of fitness, the more time you get in the saddle and on the road the more you will enjoy the experience! Do not underestimate the physical requirements of this challenge.

What insurance do I need?
You are required to have appropriate personal liability and personal accident cover. You should also have appropriate equipment cover. We also advise that you check your Home Contents insurance policy (if you hold such) to see what it covers. Tri-Nations Bike & Hike cannot be held responsible for damage, theft, or loss to your personal items (including your cycle). You are specifically asked to bring a bike lock which can be used during the day (lunch stops / toilet breaks etc) and can also be used for additional security during the night.
